Tree of boreal coniferous forests of northwestern North America and Canada. The height is up to 12–20 m and the diameter of the crown is up to 3–4 m. The shape of the crown in youth is pyramidal, with age it is more loose, ovoid. The needles are opposite, scaly, pressed against the branches, up to 4 mm long, dark green. Cones are small, 8–12 mm long, ovoid, from 3–5 pairs of dehiscent scales, yellow-green at first, light brown when ripe, ripen in the year of flowering. Fruits from 10 years. In the conditions of the Moscow region, the seeds ripen in October. The oldest specimens of western thuja known in the Moscow region are over 120 years old.
